Our client required a sports complex plaza that provided more than just open space. Studies investigated specific patterns of behaviour within local groups of sports users and spectators, the findings contributing to the design process. A multi-functional area was designed to incorporate intangible expectations aswell as physical needs such as shade, viewing areas and communal spaces. Addressing issues of identity and community raised by end-users, member's own hockey equipment inspired sculptural seating and site furniture, helped 'brand' the space, and created forms accommodating equipment bags, and allowing groups to informally gather between games.
Kwokka helped build the client's community profile developing an initiative to include mentally and physically disadvantaged adults in the construction. What started as a traditional works contract resulted in a socially-oriented project creating opportunites for community liaison and exploring the latent value of an iconic site.
